Q&A

How has the CFO role changed over the years?

Russell Beauchamp: I think if you go back in time, maybe 15 years ago, senior finance people could just sit at a desk and process data. Those days are well and truly gone. If you don’t have the skills to use technology, you’ll get left behind.

Do you think technology is easing the load on finance departments?

Beauchamp: Yes and no. It does ease the load, it does make it easier, but it also raises the bar on performance. So, what you have to produce is much more complex than it was before.

Beauchamp: I think the competitive pressure changes the role, and technology is just an enabler of that. Technology adds to that competitive environment.

What are the most important relationships a CFO has to build to ensure business success?

Beauchamp: I work closely with the CEO, and really across the business. Ideas and information come from everywhere.

What is your view on the current finance talent coming through? Is there anything they should be adding to their skill set?

Beauchamp: Young finance talent should focus on using technology to solve problems. And I also believe soft skills are just as important as hard skills.

Which skills do you believe the CFO of 2030 will need to develop?

Beauchamp: Skills in dealing with change and dealing with technology. If you don’t embrace technology, I think that you’ll be left behind.
